Donatello worked in stone, bronze, wood, clay, stucco and wax, and had several assistants, typically four of them. Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, better known as Donatello was an early Renaissance sculptor from Florence. He studied classical sculpture, and used this to develop a fully Renaissance style in sculpture. His success in Rome, Padua and Siena introduced him to other parts of Italy and provided him with a long and productive career. Donatello was educated in the house of the Martelli family. He apparently received his early artistic training in a goldsmiths workshop, and then worked briefly in the studio of Lorenzo Ghiberti. Donatello made a living by working at goldsmiths shops.
